Mood swing is a condition where there is sudden change in mood or rapid mood change. This generally happen to teenage girls, adolescent girls, pregnant women or women above 40 years. It may occur due to hormonal changes, stressful situations, during pregnancy, puberty, pre menopause, post menopause, pre menstrual cycle, depression, substance abuse etc.

How To Deal With Mood Swings?

Managing mood swings is all about taking charge; Taking charge about your thoughts, your mood, and your emotions. While dealing with mood swings it is very important to identify the reasons behind it. Few simple techniques help to identify and cope up with mood swings.

Here are few techniques to deal with mood swings:

Find out Emotional Triggers: While dealing with mood swing, first thing which is very important is to find out reason behind your mood swings, to find out why your mood fluctuates. Find out emotional triggers and avoid them if possible. Take a short break for 5-10 minutes in between, give time for yourself, and start with fresh mind.

Share your Thought: Sharing your thoughts, emotions with your best friend, family members, collogues will help to control your mood swings. This makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. Do not hesitate to share your thoughts with your friends and family members. True friends always help us to solve problems and find out solutions for them. Your friend may be the best person to find out reason behind your mood swings.

Set Daily Routine: Plan your work before you start your day. Plan out things which you need to finish on particular day according to your priorities. Make a list of things which you want to finish, prioritize them and then tick one by on once you complete it. Prioritizing your work help to achieve your targets in short time and also give you satisfied feeling of completion of your work. This helps to prevent sudden mood changes & makes you prepare for extra work too.

Set goals for yourself: Many times it happens that if you don’t achieve your targets that makes you sad and may affect your mood. Set a realistic achievable goal for yourself and try to achieve it in set timings. This make you feel satisfied, confident and can lift your mood & relieve stress.

Exercise: After exercise, body releases feel good chemicals like endorphin, serotonin, which help to lift your mood. Serotonin acts like antidepressant and controls mood swings. Daily 20-30 minutes of exercise helps in dealing with mood swings. You can practice any activities like jogging, running, zumba dance, yoga, meditation, aerobic dance etc. as a part of exercise in daily routine.

Take a Good Night Sleep: Mood swings may cause due to sleep deprivation or insufficient sleep too. This generally seen in people who are under stress. Insomnia for very long period may lead to negative emotions like anger, fear and irritability. 7-8 hours of peaceful sleep helps to prevent this problem. Make peaceful, dark, cozy environment while sleeping and keep your mind cool.

Relaxation Techniques: Deep breathing is the most effective relaxation technique to deal with mood swings. Whenever you feel that there is sudden change in your mood or your temper is getting higher, take a deep breath and count numbers from one to ten. This will help you to cool down. Other relaxation techniques like, body massage, head massage, involving yourself in your favorite activities help you to relax your body and lifts your mood.

Listen to Music: Take some time out and listen to your favorite music. This will help you to forget your worries, tensions and lift your mood.

Laugh, Laugh & Laugh! Watch some funny videos on TV & get that laughter dose. Laughter is the best therapy to treat serious problems like stress, depression, mood swings etc. Laughter relaxes your tensed muscles, realizes feel good factors, lowers blood pressure, relives stress and makes you feel good. So, laugh, laugh & laugh!

Keep Hydrated: Sometimes your mood may fluctuate because of less water intake. This may lead to dehydration. So, it is very important to keep your body hydrated through out the day. Drink at least 1.5-2 liters of water every day. Include fluids like lime water, coconut water, buttermilk, cold or warm milk in your daily diet. This keep you calm and stay away from mood swings.
